Mommie, What are you DOING?!
How do you adequately explain to a 6 year old the importance of writing books that have no pictures??
‘But what are they gonna look at, mom?’
-They’re going to look at the words, munchkin.
‘But when they’re done with the word part, how are they going to know what the story looks like?’
-Well, monkey… when grown-ups read books, they see the story in their heads.
‘Kinda like a movie?’
-Yes sweets, kinda like a movie.
And just when you think the never-ending questions have lulled for just a second—
‘But Mommie, when do I get the movies in MY head?’
!!!
Times like these help me remember why I’m here…
Ah, to Love a Thing…
I love writing. It’s as simple and as ridiculous as that. The first story I actually put to paper was for a school project, when I was 12 or 13. For a summer assignment, going into the 8th grade, our class had to choose 3 parables (from the Bible, no less) and make them into modern stories. I think my religion teacher only liked one of the stories I wrote, and I maybe got a B+, but the seed was planted.
From making up little skits when I was too young to read and write, to swiping the adult mystery novels my mom got from the library when I was only 10, the writing-bug has been with me for a very long time. It’s an activity that’s relaxing to me; invigorating, inspirational.
It can change your life.
And it would be a great pleasure to me to be able to change the lives of others through what I put on paper.
Inspiration!
(If you shout that out sort of song-like, it sounds like some defunct deodorant commercial!)
Any-who… had a sort of <AAAAHHHHH!> moment not very long ago. I’ve been waiting on one of those for a while. Seems they used to come much more often in my youth, when I had more time to waste and nothing much to lose.
I was listening to the radio, on a stereo that can still play tapes, and a really good song came on (won’t mention it directly). But as I listened, the images started running in my mind. That’s the way it’s always been – with music, movies, artwork, poetry. I have a sample of it, and my brain just runs wild.
So I’ve added it to my growing list of outlines, and hopefully I can bring most of those to fruition sometime soon…
Books & All Their Parts…
You start with a relatively simple dream: I want to write books.
So you take the first step, and you put pen to paper, or tap away on your keyboard to your heart’s content. And you might eventually produce something passable!
But then comes the details you never seriously considered before. Like – who’s going to edit your work? Personally, I can read through a story of mine and make correction after correction, addition after addition, but it’s never “done” if I do it that way. Next comes publishing. I can only play dumb on that part for so long… Oh! You mean I can’t just photocopy all these pages and staple them together??
I’ve been looking into editors and ways to self-publish, and I have to admit it can seem a little overwhelming at first.
Wish me luck…
On the Subject of Blogging…
So I’m new to this whole blogging business, but I hear it’s quite the thing these days. I’m at the point in my life where I feel completely dim in terms of technology.
I just want my cell phone to make phone calls, you know what I mean? And I would like my computer to give me access to information, that’s all.
But evidently that is not a common wish. So now I am dedicated to telling all of you nameless, faceless, priceless individuals about every boring nuance of my day. Lucky You!
Let’s see where this takes us…
